QQQ options trade for fifteen minutes after the stock market closes, and that quarter hour is a genuine source of confusion, because your QQQ shares stop trading at 4:00pm while your QQQ options are still live.

QQQ is one of a set of broad-based ETFs whose options get the extended close. SPY, IWM, DIA and a number of sector ETFs are on the same schedule. Options on ordinary single stocks close at 4:00pm with the shares.
Why the extra fifteen minutes exists
The indexes these ETFs track are still being finalized slightly after the equity close, and the closing auction itself produces a large, concentrated print. The extended window gives the options market time to properly absorb the closing cross and the index settlement in the last seconds of the session.
What it means in practice
- The option keeps trading after the underlying stops. Between 4:00 and 4:15 the option is pricing off after-hours QQQ trade and futures. Quotes get wider and thinner.
- An expiring option can still be closed in that window. If you are holding a same-day option you no longer want, your deadline is 4:15pm.
- Liquidity falls off a cliff. Market orders in that window are a bad idea, and the spread you get at 4:12 is nothing like the one at 3:50.
- Not every broker supports the 4:00 to 4:15 window. Some retail platforms stop accepting options orders at 4:00pm regardless of what the exchange allows. Check yours before relying on the window.
Exercise is a later deadline again
Trading and exercising are two different clocks. The option stops trading at 4:15pm, but an exercise instruction on an expiring equity option can generally be submitted for some time after that, and broker cut-offs are typically earlier than the exchange's. If you plan to exercise, find out your own broker's cut-off in advance of expiration day.
The rest of the calendar
- Early closes. On a scheduled 1:00pm equity half day, options follow at 1:15pm.
- Market holidays. Options follow the equity market holiday calendar exactly.
