QQQ Options Trading Hours

3 min read

QQQ options trade for fifteen minutes after the stock market closes, and that quarter hour is a genuine source of confusion, because your QQQ shares stop trading at 4:00pm while your QQQ options are still live.

The hours

OpensCloses
QQQ shares (regular session)9:30am ET4:00pm ET
QQQ options9:30am ET4:15pm ET

QQQ is one of a set of broad-based ETFs whose options get the extended close. SPY, IWM, DIA and a number of sector ETFs are on the same schedule. Options on ordinary single stocks close at 4:00pm with the shares.

QQQ shares trade longer than the options

QQQ shares trade in pre-market from 4:00am ET and after hours until 8:00pm ET on most brokers. Some brokers also offer an overnight session for the shares, five days a week. The options stay on the 9:30am to 4:15pm schedule. That is why QQQ can keep moving after 4pm while option prices stop updating at 4:15.

Why the extra fifteen minutes exists

The indexes these ETFs track are still being finalized slightly after the equity close, and the closing auction itself produces a large, concentrated print. The extended window gives the options market time to properly absorb the closing cross and the index settlement in the last seconds of the session.

What it means in practice

  • The option keeps trading after the underlying stops. Between 4:00 and 4:15 the option is pricing off after-hours QQQ trade and futures. Quotes get wider and thinner.
  • Expiration day is different. Many brokers stop trading in the expiring series at 4:00pm ET, while later expirations keep trading to 4:15pm. If you hold a same-day option, plan to close it before 4:00pm.
  • Liquidity falls off a cliff. Market orders in that window are a bad idea, and the spread you get at 4:12 is nothing like the one at 3:50.
  • Not every broker supports the 4:00 to 4:15 window. Some retail platforms stop accepting options orders at 4:00pm regardless of what the exchange allows. Check yours before relying on the window.

Exercise is a later deadline again

Trading and exercising are two different clocks. The option stops trading at 4:15pm, but an exercise instruction on an expiring equity option can generally be submitted for some time after that, and broker cut-offs are typically earlier than the exchange's. If you plan to exercise, find out your own broker's cut-off in advance of expiration day.

The rest of the calendar

  • Early closes. On a scheduled 1:00pm equity half day, options follow at 1:15pm.
  • Market holidays. Options follow the equity market holiday calendar exactly.
  • Overnight and pre-market. QQQ options do not trade pre-market or overnight. If you need exposure outside the session, that is what NQ futures are for, and the SPY vs ES vs NQ comparison covers the difference.

FAQ

What time do QQQ options stop trading?

4:15pm ET, fifteen minutes after QQQ shares stop trading at 4:00pm.

Can I trade QQQ options after 4pm?

Yes, until 4:15pm ET. Liquidity is much thinner in that window and spreads widen, and some brokers cut their own orders off at 4:00pm anyway.

Do SPY options have the same hours?

Yes. SPY, QQQ, IWM, DIA and a number of other broad-based ETFs all close at 4:15pm ET. Single stock options close at 4:00pm.

Why do QQQ options trade later than QQQ stock?

The underlying index settles slightly after the equity close, and the closing auction produces a large print. The extra time lets the options market price off that print, without having to anticipate it.

Why does QQQ trade after 4pm?

The shares trade in the after-hours session until 8:00pm ET, and some brokers add an overnight session. The options close at 4:15pm ET.

What is the best time to trade QQQ options?

Spreads are usually tightest and volume highest after the first few minutes of the open and in the last hour before 4:00pm. The 4:00 to 4:15 window is the thinnest part of the day.

Do QQQ options trade pre-market?

No. The session starts at 9:30am ET with the equity market. There is no pre-market or overnight options session for QQQ.

What happens on a half day?

Options close fifteen minutes after the equity market. On a 1:00pm early close, that is 1:15pm ET.

Session times are set by the exchanges and can change, and broker cut-offs are often earlier than exchange cut-offs. Confirm with your own broker. Educational content only. Not investment advice.
